Hell Creek on Wheels – 2016 Date TBD
Hell Creek on Wheels is a one-day mountain bike challenge at the Wilson State Park's Switchgrass Mountain Bike Trail in Kansas. Designated by International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) with Epic® status, the Switchgrass Mountain Bike Trail is a 24-mile ride of 100% singletrack that is a well-planned, sustainable trail that is regularly raced on and groomed by the Kansas Trails Council (KTC) volunteers. The main trail is a clockwise stacked-loop system with three main loops. Each is well marked with color-coded symbols. Riding begins at the Switchgrass Trailhead with the Golden Belt Loop (yellow), then merges with the Marina Loop (purple), and finally merges into the Hell Creek Loop (red). To ride the whole trail, ride in this order: Yellow - Purple - Red - Purple - Yellow. No repetition. No criss-cross intersections. No double-track. No two-way traffic. View the trail map here. For the novice rider, there is the EZ LOOP, a 5.5 mi, non-technical, but genuine single track mountain bike trail. For the little kids, there is the 1/2 mi Kids Loop. All start at the trailhead kiosk. Park roads are always nearby and make for easy bail-out access back to the trailhead. Up-to-date maps are posted at the kiosk and free handout maps are available for riders to take with them. Current maps are also accessible via smart phone. A $5.00 fee will be applied to those who register after the pre-registration date for each event. Cash or check payments accepted. Due to the cost of organizing a successful event, race fees are nonrefundable. There is always a chance that weather may force the race director to limit, adjust or cancel an event. State park officials are the ultimate decision makers in your safety. Race Fees: Cat 2/3: $25 Cat 1 will be awarded a percentage cash payout. Location Heel Creek on Wheels will begin at the trailhead of the Switchgrass Trail, which is located in the Switchgrass Campground of Wilson State Park. Wilson State Park is located on the south side of Wilson Reservoir in Kansas. Directions: Exit North at 199 or 206 (I-70) to Wilson State Park, Hell Creek Use Area. Parking and staging is in the Switchgrass Campground parking lot. Most Current Event Details & Trail Conditions Event length will be determined by racing class. Event lengths are approximate distances. Distance Options: Cat 1 is an Open age group with men and women classes. USAC annual license is required to race Cat 1. Cat 2/3 has men and women classes with 4 age groups: 18 and under; 19 to 39; 40 to 59 and And 60 and up. Cat 2/3 riders must have a one day license.
